I love surprising the kids with a piping, thermos, of hot-chocolate during an afternoon of playing in the snow. Making it from scratch, not only makes it taste richer and more chocolaty; I feel like I am doing something extra for them. It honestly doesn’t take much more time and is worth the small effort of taking a moment to grate the chocolate and then, sweeten at the end. That’s not bad, is it? And, yum… there are often a few slivers left on the cutting board for chocolate sneakers!
In Sweden, Swede’s are usually well kitted-up with thermos for outside play and hot chocolate is big. My husband’s Mother is French. I love imagining how he started his days, as a little boy, with big bowls of “chocolate chaud” for breakfast. I once had a French mother tell me that she thought “chocolate should be a food group on the food pyramid!”
REAL HOT CHOCOLATE
1/4-1/2 cup grated, quality, chocolate per child (I like to mix dark and light Belguim chocolate)
1 c. milk per child
Sugar to taste
Dash of cinnamon
Fill saucepan with milk, add the chocolate. Stir occasionally and watch the chocolate melt.
Once the chocolate is incorporated, add necessary sugar and you are ready to go. Add dash of cinnamon.
Fill glass (or thermos). Top with marshmallows.
Note: If you are allergic to chocolate, as a friend of ours is, this can be made with white chocolate.
Also, for an adult version, add a small amount (1/2 teaspoon) espresso powder to the milk. It is then, deliciously full bodied.
